The Breaking Point

Throttle & Gear Co. wanted to offer customers access to their supplier's extensive automotive parts catalogue—over 135,000 SKUs from their supplier. But their manual process of importing all products and metadata made this impossible:

• Manual product uploads were time-consuming and error-prone, taking a full week to migrate even a fraction of the inventory

• Shopify Basic restricts bulk uploads to 1,000 products per day after crossing 50k variants, making it impossible to handle the importation of 135k+ SKUs efficiently. It would have taken 3 months just to add all the products.

• Human errors in data entry created inconsistencies across product information, pricing, and availability

• The only apparent solution: upgrading to Shopify Plus at $2,100/month... a whopping $25,000+ annually

The challenge wasn't just technical; it was strategic. How could they offer their full catalogue automatically without the massive platform upgrade costs or the operational burden of manual management?

A custom API bridge with intelligent lazy-loading architecture

Rather than fighting Shopify's limits, we worked with them. We built a custom integration that connects directly to their supplier's API and only creates Shopify products when customers actually search for them.

A lazy-loading approach that bypasses platform restrictions entirely.

Our approach included:

• Direct API integration with their supplier to pull live product data, pricing, and availability in real-time

• Intelligent lazy-loading system that creates Shopify products only when customers search for specific items

• Advanced search functionality enabling customers to filter by vehicle make, model, year, part type, and tyre specifications

• Automated periodic sync to ensure product information stays fresh without manual intervention

• Rate limit management to work within both Shopify and the supplier's API constraints

The Execution

We structured the project in two phases: discovery and implementation. During discovery, we mapped the supplier's API structure and identified the rate limit challenges we'd need to navigate. During implementation, we built the integration layer and tested extensively to ensure reliability under real-world conditions.

The result: a system that gives Throttle & Gear access to their full supplier catalog without hitting Shopify's product limits or requiring a costly platform upgrade.
